The greenhouse horticulture sector has been actively involved in energy saving programmes ever since it was faced with a sharp increase in energy prices in 1980. This led, among other things, to the Kas als Energiebron (the greenhouse as a source of energy) programme which was set up five years ago by and for entrepreneurs. The programme supports not only scientific research, practical research and feasibility studies, but also field-tested pilot projects.
The greenhouse horticulture sector aims for all new greenhouses to be both climate-neutral and economically viable by 2020. At present, the Kas als Energiebron programme entails more than 80 projects and studies.
In addition, the greenhouse horticulture sector aims to become a net supplier of sustainable heat and electricity by 2020. This will minimize the total energy requirement of all greenhouse horticulture companies.
And for today? Growers will get into it straight-away: the Next Generation of Greenhouse Cultivation.
